How Facebook went from Dorm Room Dream to Dominating Dynamo

October 7, 2011

To find out what made Facebook a success, you have to go back, back, back ... back to the beginning ...
Here at the Persaud Department of Facebook Archaeology, I've dug through the pottery shards of two-year-old websites to find ancient writings on the primitive Facebook, a site which I learned may actually predate the cavemen. The GEICO ones, at least.
Anyway, I've found out some interesting facts about Facebook’s early days that may shed some light on why it's such a success.
I've always thought that people use Facebook because their real-life friends use it--and I might add, "and people whom they WANT as their real-life friends." The point is, I think its main purpose is as an extension of existing real-life social networks, which sets it apart from all the "I want to meet people who don't know what I look like" sites out there. As these articles mentioned, and as somebody probably said in class, because most Facebookers use their real identities, their real names, etc., it's so much easier to locate one another. And that, I think, is Facebook’s big secret.
But that leaves another question: why did it catch on ORIGINALLY? Why did those very first
hale, hardy, no doubt cowboy-hat-and-tobacco-encrusted-beard-wearing Facebook Pioneers drag their covered wagons onto the site?
To find out, I dug up what might possibly be the very first article ever written about Facebook, back in the Facebook Bronze Age, or at least the Crimson Age.
The Harvard Crimson published this piece on Facebook—then known as THEfacebook.com—
just five days after the site first premiered, when it had only 650 users at its very first university.
The most interesting quote, from Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg:
“Everyone’s been talking a lot about a universal face book within Harvard,” Zuckerberg said. “I think it’s kind of silly that it would take the University a couple of years to get around to it. I can do it better than they can, and I can do it in a week.”
It appears lots of people had already recognized the need for an online Facebook so that people could match Harvard names with Harvard faces, and they were ... groansigh ...
workingonitdon'tbothermesomuch when Mark Zuckerberg released his private version. (They
eventually came out with it, but they were a day late and several gabillion dollars short.) And that’s the final key to Facebook’s success—people WANTED it, but nobody had yet gotten around to DOING it. I guess initiative is a valuable character trait after all.
We also see from that article (and this one, written a week later when thefacebook.com had
4000+ members) that there's no big secret here. The early Facebookers joined, if not because their real-life friends had joined, in HOPES that their real-life friends (or prospective friends) would join—so they could meet people, for social or academic purposes, that they knew or wanted to know in real life. (This of course is what PAPER facebooks were all about, too.) Interestingly enough, that second article suggests that Facebook beat out its competitor, Friendster, because of “the private-club feel of the Harvard-only site.” And that’s probably true, and probably that feeling of a private place extended to a certain degree to other campuses back when Facebook was a college-only site. Which means that the reasons Facebook took off at Harvard aren’t really the reasons it’s a gigantic success today. Adaptation, too, is a useful trait.
So when you think about it, Facebook completely blows apart the stereotype of Internet social groups as refuges for people who don't like face-to-face conversation. (The fact that I am currently sitting alone in a darkened college computer lab on a weekend is not at all pertinent to this discussion, by the way.) Who knew that what people didn’t want naughty midnight chats with guys named SexxxyMan102456 as much as they wanted a way to have MORE face-to-face conversations?
MySpace didn’t. But Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and his roommate Chris Hughes,
seem to have known it all along. A month after Facebook's premiere, in March 2004, the Crimson published an article on the sociology of Facebook. In it, Mark Zuckerberg says basically the same thing, except he says it in a smart Harvardy manner.
Oh, and his roommate, Christopher Hughes, the very first Facebookologist, says something
similar further down. And you know that these men know the truth, because, well, they are richer than you are.
That article closes with what may be the first-ever Facebook poke joke to appear in a major
publication. And it's kind of a good one.

How to Escape the Blackhole of Internet Obscurity

October 7, 2011
In a recent survey to determine how many websites were online, the internet service company Netcraft got responses from 118,023,363 sites. This year alone 12.8 million new websites have already been added. With those numbers it is easy to see why so many sites disappear into the blackhole of obscurity, let alone get anything resembling internet traffic.

Article marketing can raise your visibility and bring you tons of site traffic. It is important to get your articles out there but it is equally important to make sure they are seen by the people you are actually writing for: your target market.

Keep that in mind. Businesses online and off have failed because they tried to be too many things to too many people. Instead of concentrating on one market at a time, they attempted to capture the mythical general public. I say mythical because one size does not fit all. Many companies have learned that the hard way.

It is no different with marketing articles to your target audience. Many owners of niche article directories have become quite flustered to the point of issuing warnings in big red letters, telling would be writers that if the article does not match the directory it will be rejected.

Do some research and share your articles in the proper forums. Find blogs related to your niche and post a comment with a link back to your article. Getting targeted backlinks is an excellent way to boost your visibility and increase your site traffic.

What other steps should you take? .

1. Are you part of a social network? Places like My Space and Facebook are at the forefront of online networking. Posting your articles to these websites can attract a massive audience and still bring you targeted traffic. .

2. Submit to a handful of the top article directories. I do not recommend submitting to every directory out there. You want to increase your visibility and site traffic but promoting one article to thousands of directories is the wrong way to go about it. That is an unnecessarily time consuming chore which can really take the steam out of your web internet marketing campaign. Instead put together a list of the top 10 or 20 directories and submit your articles to them. It is also okay to add the smaller article sites of webmasters you trust.

3. If you do not have a blog get one and start posting your articles on a regular basis. Search engines love blogs because of constantly updating content. Since the majority of your web traffic will come from search engines, the best thing to do is keep giving them what they want.

When you post your article you can tag them with the proper keywords and ping them to the various blog directories. Pinging just means you are telling these directories that you have added new content on your blog and they can check it out.

4. Collect some of your articles and put them together in a free ebook. You can find software online that will put your articles in pdf or exe format. Brand the book with your name and website address then give it away. Advertise it in ezines, give it away in forums, and send it to your customers and regular web site visitors. Do some offline word of mouth so folks will come online and grab a copy. Marketing viral is one of the most powerful ways to increase your visibility and get a lot more web site traffic.

5. Submit your article to various ezine sites. You can really do some serious targeting with this one. There are thousands of ezines on different niches. Or if you choose create your own ezine to feature your articles.

Internet brings life revolution

Internet brings life revolution
( 2003-11-12 10:50) (China Daily)

In mid-October, Bian Jing and Zhao Bin stepped out of the glass-walled rooms to breathe in some fresh air. They had been confined for 100 consecutive hours during an online survival challenge held in Beijing and each is rewarded with one Qinghua Uni-splendor laptop, the tool that had connected them with the real world.
Bian Jing, a contestant in the online survival challenge, says goodbye to her mother as her 100-hour confinement in the glass room started on October 11. The event received a great deal of media publicity. [Xinhua]The two contestants, one a college student and the other a network engineer, selected from among some 5,000 volunteers, also had a desk, a chair, a cot, a private lavatory and 3,000 yuan (US$360) in electronic currency at their disposal throughout their fishbowl-like confinement. Armed with their wireless notebooks, they were challenged to survive for five days via online subsistence and e-commerce. The event received a great deal of media publicity, including the occasional real-time live broadcast, and ran fairly smoothly except for a nagging e-commerce problem. "Generally speaking, it's very difficult to find food online. There is very little available by credit card," 20-year-old contestant Bian Jing wrote in her journal. As Zeng Pengyu, a reporter with Beijing Youth Daily who took part in the experience as an observer, notes, some restaurants claiming to be pioneers in e-commerce only list a phone number on their websites and do not even take online orders. Eventually, each participant was given 500 yuan (US$60) in cash to pay for delivered meals. Huang Junjie, general manager for Uni-splendor's laptop business, says the company sponsored the challenge to promote the idea of wireless living, but some netizens dismissed the stunt as old news. "Now that more and more people have become used to working and shopping online, online survival is no longer a 'challenge'. It's already an integral part of life," remarks one. Since its advent in China in 1994, the Internet has progressed by leaps and bounds in the Chinese mainland. As of this June, China boasted 68 million netizens, meaning that about one in 20 Chinese uses the Internet for at least one hour per week. And the number continues to rise. In a survey conducted in early 2003 by the Centre for Studies in Social Development at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), of some 4,000 people across the country, 52 per cent likened the Internet to a huge library where they can source information and news. Another 46 per cent compared it to an amusement park offering games and diverse entertainment, while 44 per cent favoured its function as a means of filling interpersonal communication gaps. "The Internet allows you to find out many things you wouldn't otherwise know," says Deng Feng, a netizen from Yima City, in central China's Henan Province. Guo Liang, the research fellow who conducted the CASS programme to gauge the Internet's impact on Chinese society, could hardly suppress his excitement about the study and the Internet. "The Internet is an open technology. Its openness is especially remarkable in China, a society relatively insulated culturally," he says. Guo admits he was surprised to find so many people in small cities, either industrialized or under-developed, hooked up to the Internet.
Bian Jing enjoys food delivered to her via online ordering but contestants found that few restaurants take online orders. [Xinhua]"Unlike what we predicted at the outset, 41 per cent of Net-surfers who go online at local cyber cafes are not concerned about the cost, but the speed." This demand for a faster connection with the rest of the world, at least virtually, coupled with the central government's determination to take advantage of the information revolution to push for electronic governance, helps contribute to the rapid growth of the Internet industry. In January 1999, more than 40 state ministries and commissions jointly initiated the e-government project aimed at boosting government efficiency. Three years on, the number of websites established by governments at various levels has topped 10,000. Propelled by this progress, enterprises are also launching their own information systems. "Customs, revenue collectors and even administrations of industry and commerce have started to receive declarations and applications online," says Li Yuxiao, director of the secretariat for the Internet Society of China. In Beijing's Fengtai District, 57.9 per cent of the new revenue registrations in April at the peak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) were processed through the Internet, surpassing registration through face-to-face visits for the first time. Nonetheless, users still complain about the lack of interaction and resource sharing on most of the government websites, which make them little more than an ornament showcasing state-of-the-art information technology. E-commerce is facing the same dilemma. Despite the ever-rising number of people cruising the information superhighway, only one million, about 1.5 per cent, shop online and they are mostly white-collar workers between 25 and 35. "Most people are not used to shopping online. For them, seeing is believing," says Lei Jun, board chairman for joyo.com, dubbed "China's first brand for e-commerce". In Lei's view, "Goods delivery and payment systems are still hard nuts to crack, too." Li Yuxiao of the two-year-old Internet Society of China points out that the key to e-governance and e-commerce lies not in the electronic part but in the "highly efficient operation" of commerce and governance. The society asks the government and Internet business practitioners to readjust and streamline their services to meet constituents' and customers' actual needs, instead of simply duplicating real-life complexities and procedures online. Unlike western countries where a good information infrastructure has accelerated industrialization, in China, Li says, information technology must first change the way people think before the industry will be substantially motivated. According to the CASS survey, 58 per cent of netizens are between the ages of 17 and 24, while those between 25 and 34 make up just 23 per cent. "Only when most of the population, especially those over 35 who are economically independent and influential, consider the Internet indispensable to their daily lives, can the industry make an imprint on the national economy," says Li Yunxiao. Although there are more than 200 million email users in China, less than 1 billion yuan (US$120 million) is collected for such services each year. "We encourage Internet service providers (ISPs) to offer quality services for a fee. On an encouraging note, the stock values for some dot-com corporations listed on the Nasdaq are climbing this year. They are no longer providing free Internet services or building castles in the air. They've found growth points with traditional industries."
Online games are one of the major revenue sources for China's Internet economy. [newsphoto.com.cn]Statistics from the China Internet Research Centre, a Shanghai-based institute dedicated to studying the Internet economy, indicates that China's still-fledgling Internet market is expected to cash in 7.45 billion yuan (US$900 million) by the end of this year. Of this, 2.77 billion yuan (US$330 million) can be attributed to messages downloaded online, while 2.55 billion yuan (US$300 million) will have been generated from online games. The rest will come from online shopping, Internet advertisements and paid mailboxes. The market is projected to hit to 20.27 billion yuan (US$2.4 billion) in 2005, nearly triple this year's estimate. But the impending success of all this, warns Li Yuxiao, is closely linked to government input in exploring information resources. "The government should guide and support software developers, Internet services and content providers in terms of funding for research and development, as well as tax relief, to bring about substantial benefits for the economy and society," Li says. In addition, he stresses, the government must fully consider the pros and cons of the Internet on the national economy and social order before mapping out a complete set of strategies. Likewise, laws concerning Internet management and regulation are also needed. As the CASS survey found, close to 90 per cent of those polled said the content of violent, pornographic and even run-of-the-mill junk emails needed to be controlled and screened. "Currently, there is much reliance on self-discipline, as in the case of fighting junk email. There is nothing binding to force any sort of compliance, so such discipline on the part of practitioners won't last long. Concerns for privacy, Internet safety, information safety and the like have to be addressed by the law," says Li Yuxiao. Whatever the concerns, the Internet is here to stay. As the CASS survey indicates, the longer people use the Net, the more positive their perception of it. Sociologists also take note of its role in free expression. "Online opinions and comments are a growing wave of strength that no one should neglect. In a way, the Internet serves as a platform for freedom and enlightenment," says Min Dahong, a CASS researcher on digital media. Hu Yong, CEO of the China Internet Institute, credited as the first Chinese to introduce the concept of a "digital society" to the country, says, "The Internet is not a luxury. It has brought changes to many aspects of life, like the economic structure and people's approaches to life, in a very subtle way." He cites an old saying, comparing the Internet to an onion. "All the hype about the Internet is like the thin, outer peel. It's what's inside that brings tears to your eyes."

Somebody has to say it, or it will be too late.

October 7, 2011
In an interview conducted byThe Wall Street Journal, US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen explained what prompted him to review his outlook on Pakistan, and how his “partnership approach” had “fallen short and would be difficult to revive”.“I am losing people, and I am just not going to stand for that,” Mullen toldWSJ. “I have been Pakistan’s best friend. What does it say when I am at that point? What does it say about where we are?”The report said that while Mullen earlier believed Pakistan was serious in its commitment to battle terrorism, the attack on the US embassy in Kabul on September 13 was a turning point. Mullen blamed Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for collaborating with the Haqqani network, the militant group the US blames for the Kabul attack. However, he believes that while the ISI may not control details of Haqqani’s operations, it provides the group “strategic support”.“It is very clear they (Pakistan) have supported them,” Mullen said in the interview. “I don’t think the Haqqanis can be turned on and off like a light switch. But there are steps that could be taken to impact the Haqqanis over time.”Mullen also said that earlier on he had worked on a plan with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani to launch an offensive in North Waziristan which Mullen believed would take away a “key haven” from the Haqqani group. He said he was disappointed when the operation did not materialize, and in the events that followed, he refrained from his practice of limiting public criticism of Pakistan. On September 22, Mullen bluntly saidhe believes the Haqqani network acts as a “veritable arm of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence Agency”. He went on to say that the Pakistani government, army and intelligence agency jeopardize the Pak-US partnership in the war on terror by “choosing to use violent extremism as an instrument of policy”.Pakistan has condemned these allegations, maintaining that it is committed to fighting the war on terror as it has been the greatest victim of militancy.

An example of Customer Service!

October 7, 2011
Customer Service is the employee's of an organization giving customer’s what they want. They need to provide the right products and the right service to all the customers and potential customers. The organization and its individuals provide products and services to meet the expectations of its customers. Customer Service applies to all types of customers, these include; individuals, groups, people from different cultures and people with specific needs. Customer service is important to the organization for the following reasons: Effective customer service promotes: customer satisfaction, job satisfaction of staff, repeat business, recommendations, increased profits, safe and secure Environment. Poor Customer Service often leads to falling of sales, customer complaints and dissatifaction, low staff morale and reduced profits.

Customer service is the most important aspect of any business. Without a tolerable relationship with its consumer base, a company is at an immense disadvantage. Today, world competition is very strong in every kind of businesses. Every organization must provide high quality products or services in order to survive, when their competitors are also providing the same or comparable products or services. An important way to an organization to get an edge over its competitors is to provide extra service to satisfy and delight their customers, which can retain them and also gain new customers. Customer service consists of the various ways in which a business looks after its customer. A business that wants to provide a comprehensive high quality customer service must be aware of, and be able to analyze, customer needs, and also to set up systems to ensure that those needs are catered for from the first enquiry to after-sale service. Customer service consists of a wide range of activities. The purpose of these is to make sure that customers are happy and will return again and again.

However if they had good customer service then more customer would go to the employees and they would make a sale increasing profits. Employees need to have good listening skills; they need to listen carefully to what the customer is asking for if they sell the wrong product then customers would be angry and they would not return to the shop. Good customer service needs to show good complaint handling skills towards the customer. They should be capable enough to be able to negotiate with them. They also need to have a wide variety of skills to show that they are capable to do stuff; this would lead to good customer skills.

Understanding consumer satisfaction and the elements that influence it are Basic for management of any service organization, striving to remain competitive and stable. Due to the abstract nature of services, any attempt to gain competitive advantage can easily be replicated by competitors. Also there is a perceived high risk in choosing a service provider as you cannot evaluate the service prior to purchase.

Therefore it is vital to establish profitable long term relationships with existing customers by not just satisfying, but if possible, delighting at each service encounter. As well as encouraging new customers who may not be satisfied with their current service provider.

12 Effective Tips & Tricks to Maximize Google Adsense

October 7, 2011
The first name which comes to everyone while talking about PPC Program is Google adsense. It is by far is the most popular contextual advertising program used by publishers worldwide. It has variety of revenue generating programs starting from Pay per click ads, adsense for search, referrals for Firefox with Google toolbar, Picassa, Google Pack. But does everyone earn a lot from it? Many think that just copying and pasting the adsense code will fetch a huge amount of money, but that’s a mistake. There are some effective tips to increase Google Adsense CTR.

The following optimization tips can help you increase your Google Adsense dollars:

1> Make sure the ads that are appearing on your site are closely related with your content. For doing this create open topic one page, use your keywords in page title, also check your keyword rich content and then mark some of your keywords as bold or italic.

2> Increase your keyword density. If you use the proper keyword density in your content, you will attract more targeted ads. Your visitors are far more likely to click on a relevant ad. Targeted ads usually pay more per click too.

3> Use Online Keyword research tools like Overture Keyword Tool, Google Keyword Research Tool and Goodkeywords.com. You can also try the free trial of Word Tracker and if you like, pay for the service. Other excellent paid keyword research tools include NicheBot and KeywordElite.

4> Use wide ads (336x280, 300x250 or 250x250). Because there are the best performing ads.

5> No Border ads. One of the best ways is to erase the borders of Adsense ads and make them merge with the website’s background color.

6> You can embed your Adsense ads in your content. You should surround the ads with the content of the page. This is where your visitors will be looking, so you should also give them ads to read and maybe click on if they're interested.

7 > Place an image near your ads because user tends to look at this section.

8> Rotate Google Adsense Ads Colors to Reduce Ad Blindness. To prevent regular users from ignoring the ads, you can officially rotate up to 4 different types of color palettes for your adsense ads. When you are selecting the color scheme for the adsense ads, press the Ctrl key, scroll up or down with the arrow keys and select multiple color schemes with the SPACE bar.

9> Track your ads. Google gives you up to the ability to track ads by web page or by the type of ads displayed. They give you up to 200 custom channels for you to use. Experiment with different ad types and positions to see which suites best.

10> Use the Adsense for search box. It's always a good idea to give your visitors the ability to search your site. If you use Adsense’s search box, you would be paid for visitors who click on the ads in the search results page.

11> Do not rely on one website. The more sites you have, the more ads have the potential to get clicked.

12> Use site maps. Use Google's site map. It visits your site and will crawl it much sooner that any other submission process.

Making money with Google Adsense

October 7, 2011
Google adsense is a money generating tool if used smartly. Google adsense is a type of advertising opportunity offered by Google through which you can earn some money only if you own a website or a blog. 'Google ad sense' are the third party ads, 'ads by Google' which you can place on your website or blog.
Goggle adsense is of two types: 'content adsense' and 'search engine adsense'. In the content adsense, small ads labeled as 'ads by Google' with appear on the side of the page. You get paid when your site visitor clicks on any of those ads. In 'search engine adsense', Google search engine will appear on your site. If your site visitor conducts a search using that and then clicks on any of the sponsored adsense ad which appears in the search results, you get paid for that click.
Procedure for using Google adsense:1. You can sign up for free by visiting: www.google.com/adsense
2. Check up with their program policies. If it is compatible with you then fill their online form. Check your e-mail, as you will be asked to confirm your e-mail address. Within 2-3 days you will receive an e-mail confirming your registration.
3. Then you can log in your account in order to obtain an HTML code generated for you by Google adsense.
4. Put this code on your website. This code will generate ads on your site which will be labeled as 'ads by Google' or a Google search engine or both depending on the option you have chosen while filling the form
5. You can choose the type of ads you want to display on your website to certain extent. For e.g.: You can prevent your competitor's ads from appearing on your site by setting up filters.
6. You can customize the appearance of the ads so that it matches your site by changing the background color, font size and type etc. So if you currently own a blog or a website Google ad sense is a good way to earn some revenue. Google matches the keywords of your site with the keywords appearing in the sponsored ads. It then places the ads matching with the content of your site. Thus the visitors on your site act as a highly targeted audience for these ads. These are the very group of people who would be interested in these ads. Every time an 'ad by Google' is clicked by a visitor on your site, you earn a commission. The amount of commission you earn per click can vary from 0.05$ to 30 $ a click. Thus everyone benefits. The website owner who has put up these ads earns money as the visitors on his site click these ads. The websites whose ads are clicked obtain more traffic. Google earns money through the bids placed by advertisers for placing these ads.
The disadvantage of using Google adsense on your site is that when your visitors click on Google adsense ads, the ad does not open in a separate window, the ad opens in the same window. Thus you lose your visitors. Your visitors land on some other site. However Google compensates for this by paying you a little commission.
Goggle has technology to detect click fraud, thus do not even attempt to cheat on goggle adsense by clicking your own ads or asking your friends to do it.
The revenue you earn from ad sense ads depends on depends on the following things:
1. How much traffic your site is getting: With a large traffic you can get a lot of clicks and thus can generate few hundred dollars per day. Thus in order to increase your earnings from Google, increase the traffic on your site
2. How well optimized is your site: It your site is well optimized i.e. if the keywords you have used in your site exactly match with the contents of the ads placed on your site, the ads placed on your site are sure to get a large number of clicks. For e.g.: Imagine a situation in which you sell flowers on your site and you have used the keywords as flowers and butterfly while optimizing your site. When you place Google adwords, ads dealing with butterflies may also appear on your site. People visiting your site are interested in buying flowers and not butterflies. Thus it is unlikely that they are going to click the ads dealing with butterflies. Thus in this case since your site is not well optimized, you don't get many clicks. You can learn about tips for optimizing your site from the Google adsense site.
3. How much money the advertisers are paying Google for particular key words: There are certain key words which are very hot and competitive. They will earn you a lot of money.
4. What is your website theme: Does your website pertain to hot keywords which are heavily bided for. Use the site www.wordtracker.com to find the keywords in demand.
5. How sticky is your website: If your website is able to keep visitors stay on it for a long time there are more chances that the visitors will notice your ads and will click on it. Make your site informative and content rich, so that more people visit your site and people stay on it longer

10 Things Before Building a Website

October 7, 2011

  1. Understand what you want. Too many businesses really don't know what they want from their website . Have you researched who your online customers are? Do you know what keywords they search for? Do you know what sites they visit? Do you know why they are looking for your site? If you don't, they you don't know what you want. You want happy customers. That's what you want (and hopefully more income as a result).
  2. It costs more and takes longer than you think.I can't count the number of times I've been asked how long a website takes, but every time they are shocked at the average development time. However, nearly every time we have "wait time" with a website, it has been caused by the clients' inaction (not sending in copy, not sending pictures, not signing off on part of the project, etc.) You can eliminate most of the wait time by having content, pictures, etc. ready for your developer to dump into the design.
  3. A web site has several pieces; don't cut corners. You should keep in mind the following aspects: Design - Does it look and act like my client expects?, Content - Does the site provide the information my clients are looking for?, SEO - Will clients be able to find my site once we make it live?, Future Additions - Have I adequately planned ahead so that I don't have to waste time interfacing the new features with existing ones.
  4. Balance glitz and guts.A good website mainly provides the information that people are looking for and does it in a pleasing way, but content wins out every time .
  5. If you build it, they won't necessarily come.If you don't have a unique value proposition you will not get any sales except from nice old Grandma Elna who bought something just to be nice. Something about your business must attract the more savvy online customers of today.
  6. Avoid bit decay; the site needs maintenance. Technology is ever changing and hopefully your business is keeping up. You need a plan to update, maintain, and improve your website on a monthly, if not weekly basis. Ask yourself, "How is my target audience changing, and how can I quickly adapt to their needs?"
  7. Treat the web team as professionals. You and the designer both have specific roles you must fill for your website to succeed.
  8. Most people in the web industry are clueless.Just because your daughter's friend's brother built a website when he was in 4th grade, that does not qualify him as a web designer. Just because your daughter's friend's brother is a graphic designer, that does not qualify him as a web designer. Just because your daughter's friend's brother owns a pirated version of Frontpage, that does not qualify him as a web designer.
  9. You get what you pay for. I think we covered your daughter's friend's brother well enough above.
  10. Don't start your project by buying a CMS.A content management system is not the way to start. Ask your web designer, they probably have a better and more customized answer for your needs.

Google Adsense success tips

October 7, 2011
There are not many things in the Internet Marketing world that you can wholly rely on. Following the advice of the 'experts' does not always yield success. In my experience though, there is one area of Internet business that can pretty reliably deliver results. And that is 'Traffic, Adsense, Money'. In other words, if you send traffic to a site with AdSense on it, you will get paid! The good bit is that you will get paid by Google, which means that the income source is reliable. There is no waiting for payments, and no panicking if the provider will go bust before they send you your money. So everything is rosy ..... or is it? Can it really be as simple as that? Well, in essence, it is that simple. Google have some simple rules which you must follow, but otherwise, you can pretty much count on receiving regular payments from Google if you adhere to the three card trick. Sending traffic to a site is not always straight forward, but there are many ways in which this can be achieved, although this is something outside the scope of this article.rams.getadspec('c_billboard1'); < !-- google_ad_client = 'pub-8925353227623969'; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; google_ad_format = '300x250_as'; google_ad_type = 'text_image'; google_ad_channel = '5461046236+086'; google_alternate_ad_url = 'http://ads2.helium.com/alternate/tribal_medrect.html'; google_color_border='FFFFFF'; google_color_bg='FFFFFF'; google_color_link='ac1816'; google_color_text='000000'; google_color_url='ac1816'; //--> What we want to discuss here, assumes that some traffic is coming to your site, and you have AdSense already established. We want to look at the 'money' element of the equation. Whilst getting traffic to your site is a major part of the Internet Marketing exercise, it is not enough by itself. Undoubtedly, when you receive traffic to a web site with AdSense on it, you will get some people clicking on Ads, and you will receive some income. However, for every dollar you make on each web site, you could be losing another four or five. Let's read that again, For Every Dollar You Make, You Could Be Losing Four Or Five!
=====================================
Ouch! But it's true. I know because I have proved it. When I started creating web sites a few years ago, I discovered AdSense, created an account, threw some code onto my sites and left it. Not surprisingly, nothing happened, and I forgot about it, and went onto other things (sound familiar so far?). Imagine my surprise when about two years later, I received a cheque from Google for just over $100. I couldn't believe it. So, the first thing I did was to look at my AdSense account and see why they paid me. I also checked my web logs and lo noticed that traffic has appeared over a period of time, and yes, people had clicked on my AdSense ads. However, I was hungry for more information. After all, if I could do this without paying attention, imagine what would happen if I tried to replicate it. I started doing the math, and multiplying my results by the number of web sites I was going to put up. I could see dollar signs in front of my eyes, and was on my way to the travel agent, when it hit me. I didn't know HOW to replicate this success. I didn't have enough information. One thing was for sure. Web sites take time to attract traffic as a rule, and by doing nothing to promote my sites, I got some results, but it took a couple of years. So, we come to a rule * There may be ways to speed things up, but you have to be patient.

And while we are at it, we can create another rule * Track your results

Now, Google does offer some tools to track your web sites, but to my mind they are limited and cumbersome . They certainly didn't give me many clues as to how and why I received my cheque from Google I wasn't able to tell anything other than which sites has produced the income. Nice to know, but not enough to enable me to replicate my success. So, I had to find another way to track AdSense results. I eventually tracked down an awesome script that did everything bar get up and make a cup of coffee. This script has everything that you need to monitor your AdSense campaigns. It not only tells you which sites are generating income, but it also tells you which pages on the sites, which Ads on the sites, which colors of which ads on the sites, which keywords were used to find you, which site referred your customer to you .... need I go on? It is a magnificent tool, and one which is indispensable if you want to succeed with AdSense I just wish I had it four years ago ....... Anyway, back to the story ...... Once I installed the script, I started to see trends in my web sites, and as I built more sites, my AdSense income grew, and I now get regular payments from Google Please note that I am NOT one of those who makes tens of thousands a month with AdSense (I wish), and I still haven't discovered the secret to that level of success. I do, however, continue to monitor my results and to read any information that I can relating to AdSense And so I come to my second point. ..... I recently purchased something else, which has had an immediate effect on my results. Please read that again I Recently Purchased Something Else, Which Has Had An Immediate Effect On My Results.

I don't know about you, but I buy a lot of material to try and help me build my online business, and I can count on very few fingers on one hand, those that actually worked as described. This is one of those that does what is says on the tin folks!. And what did I learn from this tool? First off, I should point out that the tool is excellent for the beginner, because it takes you through every aspect of setting up an AdSense web site. No stone is left unturned. And I am testimony to the fact that it goes beyond beginners as well. I have implemented some of the strategies outlined on some of my sites, and I have seen improvements in all of them. I would say that my clicks have doubled with the same amount of traffic. I do not have many high traffic sites, and this is where this really wins. It helps you get the most out of your existing traffic, and does not rely on you having to generate more traffic. Needless to say, I will continue to apply these techniques to my other sites, and certainly apply them to all of my new ones. Would you like to know what these tools are? Ok, just follow the link in the resource box, and you will find links to these sites live for you to investigate.

AdSense Account Going To Be Closed

October 7, 2011
People crack me up sometimes... Some dude from Iran figured out how to make infinite free energy, and all he needs from me is $1,000/month or else he will close my AdSense account... :)
From qeo.50000@yahoo.com:
This is a warning and if you don’t pay attention to it you will suffer from bad turns.
All your income is through Google Adsense and if you do not cooperate with us we will stop this income source.
We would like you to pay us the total amount of USD 1000 each month.
This small amount could be considered as nothing compared to your earnings from Adsense.
If you do not pay this amount we will have to close your account by the help of special robots & spaming & ...
I am not happy to do this but I have to as there is no way out of it and I trust if you were me you would also have to do the same.
I am an inventor and I have recently innovated a new design which will be accepted by scientific societies only if I can present a model in advance; and making the model takes money. They will register my new design only after they have checked all aspects of the same.
My theory is changing the power into energy. If I succeed many big problems will be solved.
All my design specification could be viewed in the following web log:
http://magnetic-machine.blogspot.com/
The magnets will be bought in installments and the amount you pay is to be paid monthly for the same.
After the registration of my design, the entire amount which I received from you will be paid back.
If you collaborate with me, you have helped to the science.
And if not, I will have to close your Google Adsense account.
I seek your help for the sake of the Science and if you are not prepared to collaborate I will have to close your Google Adsense account Waiting for your reply…..

Adsense ? The Powerful Passive Income Generator

October 7, 2011
Webmasters have a revolutionary new method of collecting income from their websites.
Whereas in the past advertising revenue was reserved for those sites with large a coming and going of visitors, now even teenagers are making a quick buck with their online hobby blogs. People place adsense on their online family photo albums, their blogs and their business sites. The minimum you would get, even with a small amount of traffic, is for adsense to pay for your hosting costs.

Adsense revolutionized the world of paid advertising; banner advertising is based on the number of visitors you attract to your site, so the number of "banner impressions" dictate the revenue you receive. Google Adsense is quite different; it is the number of visitors that actually click on the advertising that determinehow much you earn.

There is also a great disparity between payouts; because advertisers bid up the price for certain keywords, some ads pay more than others. As such, a site with few visitors but expensive keywords in their google ads can potentially still pull in a hefty payout.

Google really has taken the web by storm; attracted to passive income, more and more people are seriously capitalizing on their Google adsense advertising. Some of the highest earners manage to attract enough visitors to make a four figure monthly income, just from using adsense alone! This is not one of those get-rich-quick schemes and Google's adsense success is largely thanks to the fact that Google already enjoyed a fantastic reputation before introducing the program. They are a publicly traded company with physical headquarters. This, and the fact that anyone can apply to use adsense for free, has caused millions of people to sign up. For google it was a smart move, because now they extend their presence to countless websites and generate millions of dollars in advertising revenue. People were never reluctant to sign up, because the program is free. Google benefits by more people using adsense, so offering it for free was the best thing they could do.

One of the driving forced behind the program are its relevance to each and every page on a website; the program picks up keywords appearing in the website copy and automatically displays relevant ads. This increases the chances of people clicking through, and the webmaster collecting more revenue.

People are leveraging their income by operating several websites and attempting to attract as many targeted visitors as possible; in many instances we can observe that people work hard at a site, then once it is established they can largely leave it alone, yet still collect significant checks.

A major concern for entrepreneurs was the danger of a competitors ads showing up on their site; thanks to the adsense feature where it only displays relevant advertising. However this problem was solved by offering webmasters the option of filtering out unwanted ads. They can submit the URL of the competing site in their account, and any ads from the website will be blocked.

Google recently came out with a new feature: small targeted keywords based on the site's content are displayed; then as people click on those, a page opens showing a variety of pay-per-click ads based on that keyword. This gives webmasters the chance of displaying more advertising in less space.

Adsense also adds creditability to your website; the more focused the content, the better the ads will be and this encourages people to built high quality websites. These make the net a better place and generally provide a free service; site owners can afford to share their expertise or passions because they can receive indirect revenue's. The visitor does not pay for the information; instead the advertisers do, making the website's existence possible in the first place.

It is no surprise Google adsense is the most widely used form of advertising; they have created a program that is beneficial to both advertisers and users with their "no click no pay" mechanism, or more popularly called "pay-per-click". Advertisers do not pay for ads that are not drawing visitors, and website owners are paid more for each click than they would if the system were based on the number of people viewing the ads, instead of clicking on them.

All in all Google adsense has developed itself into a powerful tool, used by large corporations and the kid next door. They have truly revolutionized how the web thinks about advertising and made the process more profitable for site owners, while less costly for advertisers.

The Mystery of Rohan Rathore

October 7, 2011
It’s a story that would touch anyone’s heart — Rohan Rathore, an IIT-Guwahati student, loved a girl who didn’t reciprocate his feelings. He composed a heart-wrenching number for her and died of cancer 15 days later. The song, titled Emptiness, became a rage online, with around 15 lack views and eight dedicated Facebook groups with thousands of fans. However, there is a hitch. Apparently, Rohan Rathore does not exist. Gajendra Verma, a 21-year-old sound recordist from Mumbai, says that he has sung the song, written by Aseem Ahmed Abbasee, a writer, and Verma’s friend, Monami Roy. To counter the Rohan Rathore story, Verma will be releasing the complete album with six songs next month, and has already posted the song on YouTube, with a slideshow of his pictures. “I had composed the tune for a project one-and-a-half years ago. I had sent the song to some people for feedback, and I think it got leaked then,” says Verma. Reacting to allegations that he and Aseem cooked up this story to publicise the song and increase downloads, he says, “Why would I publicise my song using someone else’s name?” He adds, “I feel really bad when I see someone else’s name on my song. I don’t even know how Rohan Rathore’s name got attached to it. I know that the voice is mine.”Aseem Abbasee, the lyricist, says he is unaware about the Rohan Rathore story. “I wrote this song when Gajendra approached me for it. Its unfortunate that it got stolen and people attached a false story with it.” Shortly after the song became popular, fans got curious. Sumit Lal wrote, “I finally dug out the story. No one at IIT-G knows who Rathore is.” “People like the song because of the story behind it,”

Facebook – The Complete Biography

October 7, 2011
Facebook is the second largest social network on the web, behind only MySpacein terms of traffic. Primarily focused on high school to college students, Facebook has been gaining market share, and more significantly a supportive user base. Since their launch in February 2004, they’ve been able to obtain over 8 million users in the U.S. alone and expand worldwide to 7 other English-speaking countries, with more to follow. A growing phenomenon, let’s discover Facebook. The Facebook PhenomenonFirst, let’s start by looking into Facebook in a broad spectrum – as the network, the phenomenon, the company, and its brand. HistoryOriginally called thefacebook, Facebook was founded by former-Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg (while at Harvard) who ran it as one of his hobby projects with some financial help from Eduardo Saverin. Within months, Facebook and its core idea spread across the dorm rooms of Harvard where it was very well received. Soon enough, it was extended to Stanford and Yale where, like Harvard, it was widely endorsed. Before he knew it, Mark Zuckerberg was joined by two other fellow Harvard-students – Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes – to help him grow the site to the next level. Only months later when it was officially a national student network phenomenon, Zuckerberg and Moskovitz dropped out of Harvard to pursue their dreams and run Facebook full time. In August 2005, thefacebook was officially called Facebook and the domain facebook.com was purchased for a reported $200,000.AvailabilityUnlike its competitors MySpace, Friendster, Xanga, hi5, Bebo, and others, Facebook isn’t available to everyone — which explains its relatively low user count. Currently, users must be members of one of the 30,000+ recognized schools, colleges, universities, organizations, and companies within the U.S, Canada, and other English-speaking nations. This generally involves having a valid e-mail ID with the associated institution. Surveys & StudiesA large number of surveys and studies have been conducted around Facebook– some with interesting results. For instance, according to an internal September 2005 survey, approximately 85% of the students in the supported colleges had a Facebook account, with 60% of them logging in daily. A survey conducted by Student Monitor revealed Facebook was the most “in” thingafter the iPod and tying with beer, and comScore Media Metrix discovered users spend approximately 20 minutes everyday on Facebook. Another 2005 survey said 90% of all undergraduates in the U.S. use either Facebook or MySpace regularly, and a detailed questionnaire analysisby Chris Roberts revealed that 76.2% never click on its ads. Perhaps the most amazing statistic of all may be that Facebook is the 7th most trafficked site in the U.S.

Business & FundingGiven the situation other social networkson the web are facing, Facebook is in a good position financially. While it hasn’t managed to get acquired like its rival MySpace (despite some rumors about an $800m deal with Viacom), it’s been quite lucky in most aspects. For its initial funding, it received $500,000 from Peter Theil, co-founder of PayPal. A few months later, it was also able to get $13 million from Accel Partners, who are also investors in 15 other Web 2.0 startups, and $25 million from Greylock Partners, making their overall venture equal to approximately $40 million. For users, Facebook’s core service is completely free and ad-supported. In fact, in August 2006 Facebook signed a three year dealwith Microsoft to provide and sell ads on their site in return for a revenue split. The deal followed an announcement from Facebook’s direct competitor MySpace who signed a similar deal with Google. The youthful demographic that both the services attract is highly prized amongst advertisers and should return a good amount of revenue for both the services to stay alive – and profit. Another deal which made news in July was Facebook’s agreement with Apple to give away 10 million free iTunes samplers to Facebook users. A deal has also been signed to provide Facebook credit cards.Lawsuits & ConcernsIn its early days, Facebook faced an extremely threatening lawsuit from ConnectU, a very similar social network which – like Facebook – shares its roots back to Harvard, and as a result almost got shutdown. The founders of ConnectU alleged that Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg stole source code while he was in their employment. Zuckerberg denied the allegation and the lawsuit was dismissed. Facebook has also been host to other issues and concerns, especially in the privacy sector where its privacy policy states “Facebook also collects information about you from other sources, such as newspapers and instant messaging services. This information is gathered regardless of your use of the Web Site.” Another theory is that Facebook could also be a data-gathering project or if not, used extensively for these purposes. Facebook’s policy also states that it “may share your information with third parties, including responsible companies with which we have a relationship.”The ServiceNow, let’s look into Facebook – the service itself, and some of its features, highlights, and the things that got Facebook where it is today.Facebook ProfilesAs Facebook has evolved, so have its profile pages – new fields have been added and users can share more information than before. A typical Facebook profile consists of a number of different sections, including Information, Status, Friends, Friends in Other Networks, Photos, Notes, Groups, and The Wall. Most of the sections are self-explanatory but some are specific to Facebook.Facebook PhotosWith over 1.5 million photos uploaded daily, one of Facebook’s most popular features has been the ability to upload photos. Users can upload unlimited photos from their cell phone or through its Java-based web interface. Facebook is one of the few services to offer an unlimited quota with their only restriction being a 60-photos-per-album limit – this is much appreciated by Facebook’s college demographic. The process of uploading photos is very simple. Users create albums which they can assign limitations to (e.g. visible to my friends only) and upload photos within them. The album is then put into their profile, and other users with right credentials have the ability to see and comment on them. Facebook also gives the feature to share the photos with a simple web link or send them via AIM or by e-mail. What’s more, users can also order prints online through a simple integrated interface. Facebook GroupsJust like every other social network, Facebook has something called ‘groups.’ Users can create new ones or join and participate in existing ones. This is also displayed in their profile and is a good indication of hobbies and interests a person might have. There are two kind of groups, a normal group and a secret group, which isn’t shown on the profile. A normal group is just like any other, but users can also create and invite others into secret groups. These can be used for collaborating on university projects, and provide a way to have closed discussions. About 80% of the groups are ‘fun-related’ and companies can even sponsor groups – as is the case with, for example, the Apple users group.Facebook EventsAnother Facebook success is their ‘events’ feature, which provides the ability to organize, be part of, and plan for events. This feature has been extremely successful when it comes to organizing parties. Along with organizing and joining events, users can also invite and recommend others to an event. This feature, however, has raised some controversy as it is generally the start of underage drinking and dry campus violations. Colleges and universities use the feature to catch planning of such events before hand and investigate those that are over. In any case, it’s one of the most popular features of the service and even beats some of the competing products made specifically for this purpose.Facebook DevelopersAs of August 2006, Facebook has offered a free Developers API called Facebook Developers. This essentially gives anyone access to Facebook’s internals and lets programmers create widgets, mashups, tools and projects based around Facebook. This is an important feature for Facebook since it makes it the first major social network to give access to its API. Although it is limited to 100,000 requests a day, it’s more than enough for a decent web app to come through. What’s more, a selection of applications have already been created. FaceBank is a promising tool which lets you ‘keep track of depts and shared expenses with friends.’ Another interesting application is lickuacious which lets you ‘rank your friends by wall popularity.’ The Wall, of course, is Facebook’s comments feature.Facebook NotesFacebook’s most recent addition launched in late August. The service is called Facebook Notes, and allows users to write a Facebook blog. All notes are displayed in the user’s profile, and other members can add comments. Notes possesses an important feature, which is the ability to import and syndicate an external blog, although unlike Technorati, doesn’t allow you to claim one only to yourself (e.g. it’s possible to claim the New York Times syndication feed easily in one’s Notes). The service allows HTML to be included in the posts, although JavaScript and Flash are disabled. You can attach photos and also post via cell phone by sending your notes to notes@facebook.com. Another interesting feature is tagging – tagging a post with a username will automatically send it to that specific user. The Notes feature has been well received. The FutureFacebook is a massively successful social networking service that grew to prominence in virtually no time. It’s not hard to see why: its features and tools are highly appealing, and Facebook users are extremely well networked in real life. Rumors of an acquisition continue to circulate, with some estimates putting the price in the billions of dollars. In the short term, however, Facebook plans to go it alone, continuing to build out one of the world’s most successful social networks.

Valentine Party Favors or Gifts for Co-Workers

October 7, 2011
If time is getting short and you need to come up with party favors or "just a little something" to use a Valentine's Day gifts, then head to your local dollar store (or Walgreens) for a few simple items and a couple of bags of individually wrapped candies. Use these to make colorful party favors, place settings, or tokens of your appreciation for the hard work of your staff.Since not all dollar stores will have the same items, here is what you are looking for: small baskets, cups, buckets, drinking cups, or any other fairly small container that will hold a handful of candies. Dollar stores very often have packages of little plastic buckets, small containers (paper or plastic), or baskets (wicker, wire mesh, or plastic) that are specific to the season, holiday, or event. As shown in the example (see link at the end of this article), I found red plastic buckets with red and pink hearts. Walgreens very often has 4oz plastic drinking glasses (be sure to check the Sunday paper for a coupon and get them 4 or 8 for $1) or small baskets for the current holiday.Purchase a couple of bags of individually wrapped candies, or if you would rather not use candy, then buy votive candles, or any other small item (such as travel size bottles and containers) that will fit into whatever it is you will be using as a container. Colored tissue paper and curl ribbon will finish off the party favor or gift.Depending on the container and what will be put inside, you can either put small pieces of tissue paper in the container or use the tissue to loosely wrap around the candy or gift item. Place the items into the container. Use several lengths of curl ribbon (either all the same color or one length of many different colors used together) to tie around the handle or the top of the container. Use the flat edge of a scissor blade to curl the ribbon. These little gifts go together quickly and often cost less than $1 each (by buying the items at a dollar store or using Walgreens coupons). This is an idea that you can easily adapt to any other holiday, party theme, or just as a quick gift for a friend. I like to keep items such as these on hand, in a variety of sizes, colors, and holiday-specific items.

13 Steps to Successful Blogging

October 7, 2011
Blogs can be a very marketable and very profitable tool if used correctly. Profiting from blogs is just a matter of grabbing the attention of an audience and not doing any actual salesmen selling. In this article you will learn the 13 most essential steps to successful blogging.

1) Where to start?
You should begin your blog with a free blog hosting service such as Journal Home. I don't say that because I'm the owner, but a free blog host is very rewarding for a new blog. Starting with a free blog hosting service allows you to begin blogging instantly without having any advance knowledge of scripts, hosting, or programming. It allows you to build an audience and buzz for your blog. It allows you to focus on your content and not the internal maintenance of the blog. The best benefit of starting with a free service, is in the case your blog doesn't become successful you do not lose any money or are you left holding the bill. The great thing about a blog is that they are organized in chronological order, your latest entry is displayed first. When your blog traffic grows greatly and you are ready to upgrade to your own domain then you can simply make your last blog entry the announcement of your "move". Simply add a last entry stating that your blog has "moved" and type the new blog URL address. Which directs visitors to your new blog site, keeping your following, without a major inconvenience to anyone. Upgrade as you need to...but only when you need to!

2) Niche
A niche is a targeted product, service, or topic. You should first decide on a product, service, or topic which interest you. Choose an area which you can enthusiastically write about on a daily basis. You can use keyword research services like Google Zeitgeist or Yahoo! Buzz Index to find popular searched topics. It does NOT matter if your topic is popular as long as there is a audience for your topic and the topic is precisely focused then your blog should be successful. Anything can be considered a niche as long as it has a target audience no matter how large or how small the audience is. A blog about your cat can be a niche or a blog about the species of the cat family can be a larger niche market, if there are people who are interested in hearing about your cat or the species of the cat family, then you have a niche...you can even choose to build your audience for a market which an audience does not exist, but first you must build your blog.

3) Update Daily (nothing less)
This step is a must and not a suggestion. Updating your blog daily not only keeps your blog more interesting to readers, but it also gives your blog fresh content on a day to day making it more appealing to search engines. Not updating your blog on an occasional holiday or one day here and there is understandable to most, but missing days at a time or weeks is unacceptable and will most likely result in your blog being unsuccessful. To keep your blog traffic and retain your visitors interest it is a must to update your blog daily with multiple entries. Though, I am seeing a growing trend of successful blogs that are not being updated daily, but they are successful and have a stable audience who continue to visit their blog daily. Regardless, these blogs are still updated weekly with multiple entries. Until you have a steady audience you should try to update your blog everyday with at least 3 or more daily entries. The best way to accomplish this is to set aside 1-2 hours a day for tending to your blog and adding new entries. It may even be wise to schedule a set time which you dedicate to your blog each day. Give yourself work hours and treat your blog as a job, what happens if you don't come to work for days or weeks...you lose money or worse you get fired! Same applies here...if you don't update your blog for days or weeks you'll lose visitors.

4) Traffic
It's no secret. You must have traffic to profit from blogs. There are numerous ways to build traffic. Paid advertising, free advertising, viral marketing, search engine marketing, RSS/XML feeds, and word-of-mouth. You should always use your blog URL address in the signature of your email, forum discussions, message boards, or any other communication media. You should submit your blog URL address to search engines and blog directories. You should submit your RSS/XML URL feed to blog ping services like Technorati, Ping-O-Matic, and Blogdigger. You should confidently share your blog with family, friends, co-workers, associates, and business professionals when it relates. Many blogs can be considered as a collection of articles, for this purpose you should submit your blog entries (those that are valuable and lengthy articles) to content syndicators like GoArticles.com or ArticleCity.com. Once submitted your articles can be picked up and published by others. The trick is to make sure you include your Blog URL address in the "About the Author" passage. What this does is create link popularity and backlinks for your blog, when someone picks up your article from the syndication then publish the article on their website the "About the Author" passage is included with each publication and the link you included is followed, crawled, and indexed by search engines. Imagine if your article is popular enough or controversial enough to produce 10,000 publications across the web. The search engines is bound to find your blog in no time with that many publications and credit you a authority on the topic, in return increasing your rank on search engines. The small effort of writing a well written article is rewarding. You should try to write at least 1 full length article every week for syndication and submit your article to at least 10 article syndicators.

5) Track Your Blog
How do you know if your blog has traffic? Just because no one is leaving comments doesn't mean your blog isn't growing. Many visitors do not leave comments but they are returning visitors. I know it sounds crazy but with blogs people are more interested in what "you" have to say! Many visitors do not comment their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd time. Some do not comment at all, but are active daily visitors.

Tracking your blog does not have to be overly sophisticated usually a simple free page counter like StatCounter.com or Active Meter will do the trick. Install (copy/paste) the code into the html of your blog template and start tracking your visitors. Its better to use a service which gives you advanced traffic analysis, such as keyword tracking information, referral information, and search engine information. Visitors, returning visitors, and unique visitors should be standard for any page counter service you choose.

6) Listen to Your Audience
When using the proper page counter you should begin to see how others are finding your blog and if through search engines then which keywords are being used to find your blog. If constantly your blog is being found by 1 or more keywords then focus your blog around those keywords to make it even more powerful. When writing entry titles and entries use the keywords as often as possible while keeping the blog legible and interesting.

7) Multiple blogs
Use multiple blogging accounts (free) to attract more people. This means you should have a blog with JournalHome.com and others. The more blog accounts the better (be sure to read and adhere to the Terms of Service for each site). You can copy/paste from 1 blog to all others. Having different blog accounts is like having a publication in different newspapers. This enables you to attract more visitors and this also increases the chance that 1 of your blogs will be in the search engine results for your focused keywords.

8) Short & Concise
Aside from the lengthy article a week for syndication and publication your blog entries should be short & concise (if you can help it). Sometimes there are exceptions to the rule and you have no choice but to blog lengthy entries, but try to avoid this as much as possible. You do not want your blog entries to become hours of reading. Visitors like to easily find information and skim through your entries. It is good to be detailed and provide useful information, but do not include useless information or run away sentences that veer away from your topic. Stay keyword-focused.

9) Digital Art
Try to include non-advertising graphics, pictures, photos, and art in your blog entries. Not too much. Once a week is fine. Graphics can sometimes bring your blog to life. Of course, the content of the blog is the most important aspect and you do not want to overshadow your content with graphics, but displaying graphics can add a bit of spice to the blog. Be choosy about your graphics and make sure they fit your entry topic. You should add content with the graphic, at least a caption. Original graphics, photos, pictures, and art is recommended.

10) Keep it Personal
A blog is most successful when it is kept personal. Try to include personal experiences which relates to the topic of your blog entry. Stay away from the business style of writing. Write with a more personal style and use first-person narratives. Do not write any of your entries as sales letters, instead share product reviews and personal endeavors.

11) Interact With Your Visitors
You now have the traffic you deserve. You should begin interacting with your visitors. Create a regular theme such as: "Monday Money Tip" or "Picture of the Week" which entices your readers to look forward to each week.

Give your readers advance notice about a product, service, or topic which you are going to review and then talk about later. If the President was scheduled to give a speech then in your blog you should state that you "will discuss the speech and give your opinion after the speech airs. Comments will be appreciated".

Try your best to find exclusive information that not many have. Do not disclose any confidential or secret information which is deemed illegal or can potentially get you into trouble, but try to get the scoop before everyone else does. Such as: If your blog was about Paris Hilton (the socialite) and you had a blog entry about "Paris Hilton Getting Married" then it would be interesting to your readers if you had a actual picture of Paris Hilton engagement ring. Give your best effort to dig and search the internet for exclusive information and you will possibly come up with something useful. Your readers will appreciate this and they show their appreciation through word-of-mouth referrals. Imagine how many readers will tell their friends, family, and others about information they only can find at your blog.

12) Make Money
Once your blog has gained some real momentum and your blog traffic is increasing then it is time to start thinking about turning your traffic into profit. You should use contextual advertising, like Google Adsense or Chitika. Contextual advertising is usually text links which use the content of your blog to publish targeted ads on your blog. The payout is usually based on a pay-per-click model, meaning for ever click an ad receives you are paid a small percentage of the profits. In addition to contextual advertising it is good to also use graphical advertising such as: BlogAds.com, Amazon.com, MammaMedia, or General Sponsored Advertising.

13) You're a Professional
You're a professional now! What are you still doing with that free blog hosting service? It is time to upgrade to a domain hosted solution. You need to get a web host and choose a domain name for your blog then check its availability. Select the blogging software you wish to use, such as: Squarespace.com, WordPress.org, MovableType.org, TypePad, etc. When you have your new blog domain setup and ready for traffic then it is time for you to announce your move on all your previous blog accounts. Your last entry to the blog should be a "move" announcement. The title should be "Moved" and the blog entry should state something like "I have a new home for my blog, please bookmark and follow the link: http://www.YourNewBlogDomainName.com". This way all returning visitors and new readers should not have any problem finding your new blog domain. Plus, search engines can easily index and crawl your new blog, since your old blog should already be popular with the search engines.

At the level of a professional blogger you may want to team up with 1 or more other bloggers. This will create a more interesting and more powerful blog. The old saying "two heads is better than one", more authors mean more advertising and exposure because each author will have a vested interest in the blog. The idea of a team blog is to make it profitable and rewarding for all authors, while continuing to target the blog topic and keeping the blog interesting for visitors.

Following these blogging techniques should make your blogging experience much more rewarding. There is no guarantee that your blog will become popular or a household name, but the effort should at least put you one step closer. Making money online is not an overnight experience like many may think, but making money online is definitely a foreseeable possibility. As well, growing popularity on the web is not an overnight experience, but through time, dedication, and persistence you will be rewarded with all the royalties of blogging.
